Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25th December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He was born in a middle-class Brahmin family. His parents were Shri Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and smt. Krishna Devi. Pandit Shyam Lal Vajpayee was his grandfather he migrates to Gwalior from his ancestral village, Bateshwar in Uttar Pradesh.
Vajpayee’s father was a school Master and a poet. He completed his schooling in Saraswathi Shishu Mandir, Gorkhi in Gwalior. He completed his graduation in Hindi, Sanskrit, and English from Victoria college which is in Gwalior. Now it is known as Laxmi Bai college. He did his M.A in political science in DAV College, Kanpur. He obtained first class in it.
He is fondly called as Baapji by all in his close relatives and friends. He was single in his entire life. He adopted one girl later and make her as his daughter. Her name is Namita. He is a nature lover. He loves Indian music and dance. Manali in Himachal Pradesh is one of his favorite retreats. He entered politics in 1942 at the time of Quit India Movement.
He and his elder brother Prem got arrested for 23 days during that time. He joined Bharatiya Santa Sangh when it was newly formed in 1brotherri Shyam Prasad Mookerjee was the first leader of the party Vajpayee got motivated by him. Vajpayee was with Mookerjee in a fast unto death protest in 1951 in Kashmir against the inferior treatment shown towards non-Kashmiri visitors.
During this strike, Mookerjee died in prison. Vajpayee studied law but did not complete it as he was more interested in journalism. This may be due to his active participation in India’s Freedom struggle since his student life. He also served as an editor in Hindi weekly and monthly newspapers like panchjanya, Rashtradharma respectively. He also served as an editor in daily newspapers like veer Arjun and Swadesh. In 1951 he was one of the member and founders of Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

In 1957, he was elected as a member of 2nd Lok Sabha. He was the leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in the parliament from 1957 to 1977. In 1962 he became a member of the Rajya Sabha. He remained as the chairman of the committee on public accounts till 1970. From 1968 to 1973 he served as the president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. From 1990 to 1991 he was elected as the chairman of the committee of petitions. In 1991 he again became as the member of 10th Lok Sabha from 1991-1993 he was the chairman of the committee on public accounts. From 1993 to 1996 he was the chairman of the external affairs committee and also the leader of the opposition party in Lok Sabha. In 1996 he again became the member of Lok Sabha for the seventh term.
From 16th May till 31st May he served as the Prime Minister of India for the first term. From 1996 to 1997 he was the leader of the opposition Party in the Lok Sabha. He served as the chairman of the External Affairs Committee from 1997 to 1998. He became a member of the Lok Sabha for the eight-term in 1998. From 1998 to 1999 he again served as the Prime Minister of India for the second time. He also took responsibility for external affairs and in charge of Ministers that were not specifically appointed. In 1999 he again became a member of Lok Sabha for the ninth time. From 13th oct to 13th May he served as Prime Minister of India for the third time.
During his tenure as PM of India, he conducted five underground Nuclear test in the desert of Pokhran which is in Rajasthan in 1998. In early 1999 he initiated a diplomatic peace process with Pakistan. Bus service was inaugurated in February 1999 from Delhi to Lahore. His government introduce several infrastructural and economic reforms, encouraged income from private and foreign sectors and simulated research and development.
His government passed the Prevention of Terrorism Act. GDP grew to 6 to 7 % international image of the country improved with the modernization of industries and public infrastructure, increased foreign investments, IT industry got bloomed in his period, many new jobs were created, industries got expanded and agriculture got improved. He received Padma Vibhushan Award in 1992. He received best Parliamentarian Award in 1994 and was honored with Lokmanya Tilak Award in the same year.
He got retire from Politics due to health issues and was suffering from dementia and diabetes. He mostly stayed at home because he failed to recognize people and he got his regular check-ups at AIIMS. He breathed his last on 16th August 2018 after a prolonged illness.
