Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi is one of those names that will be written in golden words on the pages of history. He is a former Pakistani cricketer, founder of Shaukat Khanum and is current and 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Imran Khan was born on October 5, 1952, in Lahore in an upper-middle-class Pakhtun family. He is the only son of Ikram Ullah Khan Niazi and Shaukat Khanum and only brother of four sisters. Imran obtained his early education at Aitchison College in Lahore and Royal Grammar School Worcester, England. For further education, he enrolled in Keble College, Oxford and graduated with honors in 1975. He studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Imran Khan was a quiet and shy boy when he was young. He outdid himself as a cricketer in Worcester.
He played for various teams of Lahore in various seasons during the 1970s. Khan began his test cricket career in 1971 at Edgbaston. He was a part of University of Oxford’s Blues team from 1973 to 1975. Imran Khan also played at Worcestershire from 1971 to 1976.
He was regarded as a passable bowler at that time. During 1970s Imran Khan also represented Dawood Industries from 1975 to 1976 and Pakistan International Airlines (1975-76 to 1980-81). He also played for Sussex from 1983 to 1988.
After graduating from the University of Oxford he secured a permanent place on Pakistan Cricket team and played against New Zealand and Australia. In 1978, Imran Khan began to establish skills as a fast bowler. By 1982 he reached the peak of abilities and took captaincy of Pakistan cricket team.
His test cricket career and captaincy are regarded as his glorious history due to which he is also given nickname of “Kaptaan”. Imran Khan led Pakistan to victory in Cricket World Cup 1992, where he promoted himself as a batsman and his role as a bowler was minimal.
After retirement, Khan also contributed in writing his opinion on cricket in various newspapers. He also appeared as a commentator on national and international channels. Imran Khan also rendered services as UNICEF’s special representative for sports and promoted health and immunization programmes in Pakistan, Thailand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Khan built the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust in 1991, a charity organization bearing the name of his mother.
Imran Khan’s mother died due to the non-availability of Cancer hospital in Pakistan. So, he Built Pakistan’s first and only cancer hospital using donations and funds raised by him from all over the world. Donations and funds exceeded $25 million. He also established a technical college in Mianwali called Namal College. Imran Khan has always remained a step ahead in helping the needy.
In November 2005 Imran Khan was appointed as the chancellor of University of Bradford but he was removed from the post in 2014 due to being busy in politics. He was regarded as a role model for the students.
In 1995, Imran Khan married a British lady – Jemima Goldsmith. She was the daughter of world’s richest man at that time. They had two sons but they separated. However, they manage to have a friendly relationship with each other. Jemima always stood by him whenever he needed her and wishes best for him.
Khan stepped into politics in 1994. He founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on April 25, 1996. He secured only one seat in election 2002 and remained a member of National Assembly from 2002 to 2007. He faced political opponents in and outside the parliament during that time. He resigned from his seat and was also arrested during a protest.
He was again elected to the parliament in the 2013 elections when his party emerged as the second largest in the country by popular vote. Khan claimed that the elections were rigged in the favor of PMLN.
He led a rally of his workers to Capital demanding resignation of Prime Minister of the time (Nawaz Sharif). The sit-in lasted for about two months. The Panama Paper Leaks in 2015 regarding the offshore companies of Nawaz Sharif and sons provided Imran with a big chance and he seized it.
Khan married again in 2015 and this time the bride was a journalist and former weather presenter at BBC(Reham Khan). Unfortunately, the Marriage lasted for less than a year.
During the period from 2016 to 2018 rumors emerged that Khan has married his spiritual advisor Bushra Manika.
While as, Imran Khan denied all the rumors and termed them as unethical. In February 2018 his marriage with Bushra Manika was confirmed. He also performed pilgrimage with her.
During the tenure, 2013-18 Khan’s political activities have gained momentum and in the election of July 25, 2018, his party emerged as Pakistan’s largest party. PTI had won 115 of the 270 seats contested.
PTI has established the government in KPK and Punjab too. Khan has contested from five constituencies and led the poll. After a long struggle of twenty-two years, he has been elected as the twenty-second Prime Minister of Pakistan.
